Happy Birthday Dr. King!
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase!”
On January 15, 1929, Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia. King was an American Christian Minister and Activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.
On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN.
The day before his death, King addressed a rally and delivered his famous “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speeches.
Here’s a glimpse of his prophetic speech, that he had spoken that night:
“And then I got to Memphis. And some began to say the threats, or talk about the threats that were out. What would happen to me from some of our sick white brothers?
Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. So I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”
Today we celebrate a man whose 39 years of life have impacted generations upon generations.
His fight was so much harder, and his legacy has made such a tremendous impact for so many of us.
Let his legacy and all that he fought for inspire you to take take the first step towards doing the things you desire to do and take advantage of the freedoms that we have today, as a result of his fight!
Happy Birthday Dr. King!
